How to fix Windows 8 default icons messed up by IconPackager

Symptom: default Windows 8 icons look wrong. For example "shield" icon for some .exe files and for unknown files (also for files without extension) etc.

Here's how to fix it:

0) backup your registry, just in case (I recommend also to create a restore point)

1) start regedit

2) navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer and expand it

3) find "Shell Icons" key (note: this key does not normally exist in fresh Windows 8 installation...

Here are two "exotic" (and sporadic) bugs that the support could not reproduce in several attempts. Since those occur over several versions of Fences (even v1), several new installations on several systems and even Windows re-installations, it is nearly sure that they are problems of Fences itself. Maybe someone has the time to test them out and bring the missing link to reproduce them or even a solution.

Setting font size for icon label on tabs

I can't seem to find a way to reduce the size of the actual icons and labels on the individual tabs. The label for the tab itself is fine. However, when I select a specific tab, the icons and labels are huge. I've tried to play around with the only font setting I can find and it does nothing to the icon labels. I'm at the lowest size for the icons (33 pixels) and they still seem huge. Is there some Windows setting I need to change to fix this or is...

Registered Fences keep asking for product key every several days

I am a proud owner of Fences.

But on Windows 8 every several days I get pop-up message from Fences that I have to enter product key,

purchase product key or to start 30 day trail.

So every time I have to log-in to Stardock to copy/paste product key and succesfully activate Fences.

Fences is wonderful, but how do I solve this registration problem?

I am trying to align fence windows to the top edge of my monitor but when I drag them to the edge, the title of each fence window moves down to the bottom of the fence.

Is there a way to force Fences to never move the title bar or keep it always on the top of the fences? Turning off fence labels works, but I would much rather have the labels.

We have a few people in our business who are using Fences 1.01 on their computer and I would like to know if as long as they dont upgrade, it's still legal licence-wise to continue using the 1.01 version freely?

I know Stardock doesnt offer a free Fences version anymore, but is the older one still free of use for anyone as long as wanted?

When I use a skin that changes explorer, notepad++ and Scite get all messed up on the toolbar / menus.

Adding them to exceptions did not fix the issue.

Adding explorer exception did not fix the issue.

Resolved by using a skin that either makes explorer similar to original colors, or does not skin it at all.

This is very disappointing, I wanted the system menu's to be skinned.

I hope I'm doing it wrong....

Just curious.

I've been away from things the last year or so, due to family issues and being pretty sick myself, and so just now decided to renew my Object Desktop and Wincustomize subscriptions.

The wincustomize subscription renewal completed immediately, with no issues, but I got some sort of error / informational message from the Object Desktop renewal. Don't remember the text of the error offhand, it was something like, 'we'll be in contact', or words to that effect...

On secondary system, I do not get a mouse cursor displayed unless there is a mouse actually connected to the system. Is this normal behavior?
