Comparing Sweden/Finland/Denmark vs. other countries

Every few weeks someone writes an article comparing some amazing statistic from the Nordic countries in Europe and then compares that statistic to the United States in total.  It’s always some ridiculous apples and oranges comparison that results in a meaningless comparison.

So just as a reminder, the populations of these countries are:

Sweden: 9.5 million Denmark: 5.6 million Finland: 5.4 million Norway: 5 million In addition, demographically and culturally they...

Data recorders in your car?

Well, everyone knows about the two data recorders in airplanes. But cars? Really?

Ostensibly, it’s the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) which is recommending this for cars, and if they have their way, we might see them in cars by 2014.

This rulemaking proposal is called:

A Solution – The Shorter Version

Phil Osborn  07/06/12, 11/16/13

The problem:  People are starving while the disparity between rich and poor is growing.  Meanwhile, class, ethnic, religious, etc. divisions are created, nurtured and exacerbated for the profit and power of people who are fundamentally sociopaths, and profit from misery.  While the planet heats up, due to our failure to incorporate externaities into our economic decisions, more and more of our availa...

Full-screen on secondary monitor

Hi,

I'm running Windows 8.1 Pro on a laptop with a secondary monitor. Both monitors are the same resolution (1920 x 1080) but when I open an application to full-screen on the secondary monitor I lose the very top of the screen. The loss isn't very much but I lose half the control buttons in the top right corner. Changing skins doesn't seem to change the status. What do I need to do to get WindowsBlinds operating properly?

A windows 7 theme for windowblinds

I purchased WindowBlinds in hope to find a theme that looks just like windows 7 as if side by side, its not easy to tell the difference. The Diamond theme didn't really accomplish that for me. I tried looking all around wincustomize for the theme but couldnt find any. Does anyone know a theme that looks exactly like windows 7?

The Most Popular WindowBlinds Skin of All Time!

Since we’re spending this month celebrating 15 years of skinning WindowBlinds, I wanted to find out what was the most popular download on WinCustomize.com.  From the best I can tell and confirm, Vista Plus Version 3 comes in with over 900,000 downloads since it was released in 2006.

Vista Plus Version 3 by adni18

It’s a little funny a Vista skin has been one of the most downloaded, but as some of you might remember the glassy look was really popular and many skinners created a bun...

The Second Amendment thread

My old friend Steven Den Beste wrote this awhile back:

Let's talk about the Third Amendment for a moment. Remember that one? Probably not; in this day and age it's something of a Constitutional joke. "No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law."

Remember now? The Bill of Rights which passed Congress had twelve clauses, and ten of them were almost immediately ratified by ...

Bug: Incorrect order when sorting by name

It seems that when sorting by name, length of the string is overriding lexical order and generating incorrect results. Examples:

-Torchlight II sorted before Torchlight. Should be the other way around.

-Freedom Force vs. the 3rd Reich before Freedom Force. Should be the other way around.

Also, if you want to be truly awesome, ignore articles at the beginning of the label so that everything beginning with "A ..." or "The..." don't get lumped together

Thanks for supporting the Winamp community for over 15 years."

That is too bad, although I started using AIMP some time ago.

Stardock turns 20: The five Stardocks I’ve worked at

It can be quite a challenge to work at the same place for 20 years. I think that’s doubly true if you’ve never worked anywhere else.

That said, looking back, I haven’t really worked at the same place for 20 years. I’ve actually worked at 5 places, all called Stardock and all very different.

vanishing icons

I installed 2.11 on my Windows 7/64 laptop yesterday and immediately thought Fences was fabulous--the perfect solution to the maddening problem of ever rearranging icons that bedevils many Windows users. After spending a lot of time setting up Fences, in an instant, every single one of my desktop icons vanished. In vain I looked for a solution in the Fences control panel, but only uninstalling Fences brought them back. I really, really wanted Fences to work, so I installed again, and exactl...
