R.I.P. Michael Ansara (Kang in Star Trek, Elric B5, Cochise, The Blue Djinn, voice of Mr Freeze, etc...)

Michael Ansara, known for numerous roles, including Kang in Star Trek, has died.  He was 91.

http://www.cnn.com/2013/08/03/showbiz/star-trek-actor-dies/index.html

Among other tidbits, he was married to Barbara Eden back in the '60's, and more recently to his wife Beverly until his death.

When I read about Barbara Eden's connection, I had this vision of Kang having a 'Major Nelson' moment as Jeannie plays tricks on him.  That would have been one ve...

Sad news: Inventor of the Mouse, Doug Engelbart has passed.

He was 88. He believed his work was all about “augmenting human intellect”. To him this meant making computers more user friendly, smaller and given to intuitive use. All to help solve mankind’s problems.

Towards that end he developed in the ‘60s and ‘70s a funny little device: The mouse. It started as a wooden shell covering an ‘x’ and ‘y’ wheel, which together determined the screen position indicator (cursor). The f...

Small Icon feature in Win 7

I have used WinFX for years, honestly I really used it on XP for 2 things, window shadow and small list style desktop icons. Now with a new machine with Win 7, I installed my old version on my new machine and widows shadow on 7 is rather redundant, so small icons are all I care about and they don't seem to work. Does the current version have this feature for 7? The feature list on the product page is pretty brief.

England and Google Glass

Turns out our allies across the pond aren’t terribly thrilled with the idea of people driving while wearing Google Glass.

Can’t say I blame them. Distracted driving kills and maims. There’s no evidence to support the claim that this wouldn’t distract less.

“According to U.K.-based Stuff, the Department of Transport (DfT) has moved to outlaw the use of Google Glass while operating a motor vehicle, even before the spectacles become available to the gen...

Start8: Using a Custom Start Button Image

Start8 has been well received and has become quite popular with users of Windows 8.  I wanted to focus on one feature in particular today which is the ability to use custom images for the start button.  Start8 already includes a couple you can choose from in the main configuration, and there’s also several custom ones available that are included as well.

Change the Start Button Changing the start button image is easy, just click the ‘pick image’ box in the Style section of the St...

How can I tell how fast my internet connection really is?

Hello people,

I just moved, and just got hooked up with DSL from the evil people of Vodafone, by way of Deutsche Telekom. They claim to have given me, for a substantial cash subscription on my part, a very high speed 50MB connection (instead of the standard 6 which,  apparently, for Berlin is normal). But I have my doubts. I'm not sure if a wireless ethernet connection to my laptop effects DL speed, or where a bottleneck might come from, any tips are welcome. Currently, I j...

Mini-Contest for Start8 Start Buttons!

I thought it would be fun to have a quick mini-contest as we think about a bigger competition for the end of the year.  I chose Start8 as it’s easy to make start buttons for and can include a broader reach of people.  This is also a great to get some exposure as Start8 has been downloaded millions of times and is in the top lists of sites like download.com.

A start button for use in Start8 is just an image file with 3 vertically stacked images in a .png fo...

Mercy for thee but not for me

There's a great line in Atlas Shrugs that goes like this: "You concluded I was the safest person in the world to spit on because I have power over you and that I would be tied by the fear of hurting your feelings by reminding you of it."

Our society seems to have taken that view en-masse in recent years.
