MS Preparing to Rethink Windows 8

MS is preparing to reverse its thinking on key elements of W8!

Figured this was coming with its lackluster sales. Frankly? This is a brave move. It might also be Ballmer’s last one.

“Key aspects” of how the software is used will be changed when Microsoft releases an updated version of the operating system this year, Tami Reller, head of marketing and finance for the Windows business, said in an interview with the Financial Times. – Financial Times

A few nice things to have in Fences

I'm loving Fences more than I thought I would, but two things so far are standing out.

1. It would be nice if I could adjust the icon spacing within a fence (global or per fence)

2. It would be nice if I could change icon size in each fence independently of other fences or the main desktop.

I know #2 is asking a lot, but #1 should be doable.

Ok. So who’s going to see this?

So far, I’ve managed to stay spoiler free.

Hey you!

So…

Whatcha doing?

Button "Show my desktop" does not work with modal window in Windows 7 64bit SP1, Fences 2.0

If there is a modal window opened in an application it is impossible to hide all windows (Win+D or right button in task panel). Thus it is impossible to use Fences 2 ((

If I turn off Fences 2 and restart Windows it is working properly (showing desktop with modal window).

No response from support

I submitted an request for assistance on Monday, but I haven't heard anything back from support. Ticket YME-501-46822. There is no way for me to make a query to the ticket, so I'm hoping this will do. I would like to have a status update to this ticket.

WINDOWS 8

The aero option is still available in this just-released build. But the 'intel' is it won't be in any further beta (if there is one) and not in the

RTM and retail versions. That means, as far as I'm concerned, WinBlinds is back in the loop (I lived without it on WN7.) I like aero - turn it

off and you'll see what I mean. Bland. There will be many, especially those using Metro on phones and pads, who won't want it.  I can see

the reason for that. A flat look ...

WSJ Takes a Look at Start8, Calls It “the Best”

Walt Mossbert from the Wall Street Journal takes a look at Windows 8 Start Menu replacements including Stardock’s popular Start8.

“This is a $5 utility I found to be the best I tried at simply restoring the old Start Menu. If the price deters you, there's a 30-day free trial. Start8 comes from a company called Stardock, which makes utilities and games.

As soon as I downloaded and installed Start8, the old Start Menu was back.”

3D Printer Opinions

3D Printing seems to have crossed a major mile stone in that a start-up, called Defense Distributed, has used a 3D printer to create a working gun. It’s still mostly a curiosity since the cost to make such a gun and that it isn’t yet very robust still keeps it firmly in the early adopter era.

So here’s what I’ve found out so far :

No matter which printer you get, the materials for it are currently over $100 a pound. To me, that makes it fairly impractical for most uses. I could imagine...

The Oblivion movie thread

My wife and I saw this on Friday.  I won’t put any spoilers in this post but suffice to say I was fairly disappointed.  Tom Cruise did about all he could do with it and the production values were amazing but the story fell flat for me.

6/10.

Install fails with redirected documents folder

Attempting to install DeskScapes 8 on either Win7 or Win8 fails for me. My 'my documents' folder is redirected to a server by corporate policy. There is plenty of space, and the redirection should be largely invisible to apps using standard 'special folder' APIs - in fact this is the first modern installer that has failed.

The app itself gets installed locally (standard c:\program files (x86)\Stardock\Object Desktop\DeskScapes8), and then after getting the "1...4" popups...

The Intelligence Center of computer security firm Mandiant has identified the majority of highly sophisticated attacks on the U.S. to have originated by 4 networks in a bland, twelve story building in Shanghai which houses (allegedly) a super secret cyber warfare unit of China’s Army.

“Highlights of the report include:

Evidence linking APT1 to China’s 2nd Bureau of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) General Staff Department’s (GSD) 3rd Department (Mi...

Does't work for Win7

I downloaded the version which states works in windows 7. When I choose one the pre-installed logons and then click apply, the computer locks but the logon screen is exactly how it's always been. I even tried running it as Administrator. Still doesn't work.

I've also tried it on my friend's win7 machine, and had the same effect. This hasn't been working for a long time, I know that. This isn't the first time I've tried using it.

Either fix it...

Some Apps don't skin

So I have a question:

is there a posibility for thunderbird, skype, media player classic and miranda IM to set it uses default aero theme?

I installed wb's and everything skins normally but those apps except thunderbird (which has skinning issues by itself) have default classic windows style of currently applied skin.

When there is no skin applied they function normally with aero skinng, but there seems to be no possibility to set aero skin only for those 4-5 apps since th...

Physics - Big Bang Bust – Bibhas De and Myron Evans

To use a quote from The Matrix, what you know you can’t explain, but you feel it. You’ve felt it the entire time, that there’s something wrong with String Theory and Big Bang Theory. You don’t know what it is, but it’s there, like a splinter in your mind.

I was browsing through the net when I came upon a website, http://www.bibhasde.com where the author and physicist writes about the COBE satellite scam (and the follow up WMAP and PLANCK satellite cover...

The amazing Entlebucher mountain dog

As a side-hobby, I run the Facebook Entlebucher page. Entlebuchers are an amazing breed of dog.  They’re closely related to the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Swiss Mountain dog.  What sets them apart is size, life span, and hair length.  Entlebuchers are about 50 pounds, they have short hair and live around 14 years.

Personality wise, Entlebuchers (pronounced Ent-Lee-Booker or Ent-Lees) are velcro dogs. That is, they want to always be with you.  There is a saying...

Resizing Hand cursor for tablet presentation

I want to create a presentation where my screen looks like a tablet.  I would like my cursor to be an almost  full size hand.  It would be nice if something happened (ie the finger bent or something) when I clicked on the screen.  I looked at the "hand" cursor.  It looks good but very small.  I don't mind paying the price for plus to resize this if it will work.  Does resize allow the cursor to be made almost as large as a real hand.  I have my doubts....
